Are You Joining The "No-Makeup Revolution"?

October 27, 2023 Rebecca Siegfried

Here are some tips and ideas for the no-makeup or some-makeup look!

I was reading in the October 12, 2023, USA Today (not my favorite newspaper, but good article) on Pamela Anderson and how she has joined the no-makeup "revolution". Hats off to her, but just remember that it is much easier for celebrities to pull this off because of lasers, fillers, injections and such. With this in mind, lets look at some tips on how to either achieve this look or if you just want to have healthier, glowing skin.

Also and always you do YOU!

If you like makeup and it makes you feel good, do it! If you don't like it, don't do it! Just because someone else is doing something, it doesn't mean you have to go along (Mom, was that you?). I personally like a touch of makeup on my fresh skin, most French women will agree with me on this one.;)

Check your Social Media

If you want to go with the sans maquillage (no-makeup) look you can actually follow influencers who post unfiltered and raw photos of themselves on SM, says Dr. Michael Keys, a plastic surgeon at the University of Lousiville. Just keeping in mind a lot of those celebrities "often use filters, photo editing apps to minimize skin discoloration, wrinkles and extra fat in unwanted places. It's important from a wellness standpoint to recognize what's real and what's not".

Adjust your makeup routine...

Aging is inevitable, but you can still try to look and feel your best. Dr. Heidi Goodarzi, a certified dermatologist specializing in cosmetic and medical dermatologist, suggested replacing foundation with tinted sunscreen for a wash of glow that won't conceal your natural features.

Exercise!

"Exercise has been shown to reduce wrinkles by increasing blood flow to the skin's surface where collagen synthesis takes place; reduce sagging skin by strengthening muscles that support facial features; prevent or treat acne by reducing oil production in clogged pores; improve muscle tone so you're less likely to have saggy jowls or double chins from excess fat around the neck area (which also happens when we age); improve body shape by increasing lean muscle mass while decreasing excess fat deposits on the hips/thighs/buttocks region where cellulite often appears due to lack of physical activity over time...the list goes on!" -ASFA, American Sports & Fitness Association

Have you got tired skin?

The most common reason for tired skin is lack of sleep, so don't forget your 8's!...
Repeat after me, "sleep is my friend!" Getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night and going to bed consistently at the same time every night will help to keep you and your skin healthy, happy and balanced!

“Overnight skin goes into repair and restore mode, meaning it removes toxins, repairs cells and DNA damage caused by the environment, replaces aging cells, and creates new ones. That’s why after good-quality sleep, skin looks fresher, younger, and more radiant.” According to the National Sleep Foundation

Moisturizing your damp skin!

Timing is very important when applying your moisturizer. Right after you wash your face or jump out of the shower, lightly blot your skin with a clean towel and then apply your toner, serum and then moisturizer. This way your skin will absorb and lock-in all those nutrients, staying plump, hydrated and glowy all day!

"Dryness is the most common cause for dull face skin. It creates cracks in the skin's surface and causes dead skin cells to build up, making the complexion look uneven and lackluster", says Kenneth Howe, M.D., a dermatologist at Wexler Dermatology in NYC.

Cold blast your face and body!

A cold shower, steamy suds-up and icy rinse finish will perk-up tired looking skin and refresh your mind!

Blush, don't bronze!

When your skin is looking tired you automatically think sun-kissed skin right? Actually you want to restore a beautiful glow, so grab a creamy pink or peach blush instead!

P.S. and remember...

“You is kind. You is smart. You is important.” – Aibileen, from The Help

With Love and Blessings!

Natural Spanx's For Your Skin?!

April 21, 2023 Rebecca Siegfried

We all know that dense skin is more youthful, uplifted skin, right?

So Where Do I Start?

Whether it’s day or night your skin is stressed from the effects of environmental pollutants, coffee runs, not enough water, etc. What your skin really needs is a breath of fresh air and a long drink of moisture. Whtih the Dr. Lucy Ultra Moisturizer your skin isn’t just softer, stronger, more uplifted, nourished and stress free, it actually is healthier! This is also a natural, self adjusting moisturizer that nourishes and protects your skin all through the day and night. Perfect!

But What About Over The Counter Moisturizers?

Over the counter products or OTC’s are convenient and will usually cost you a lot less, but not always. The problem with OTC products is they are usually made with chemicals in a big factory, or the natural oness are rancid with all their “plant base powers” oxidized and gone gby the time they get to you. Plus, they have a very low precentage (poxie dusted) of active ingredients in them to actually help and protect your skin.

"*Quality, natural skin care products like Dr. Lucy’s not only work better to make those positive changes in your skin, but they are more potent and concentrated so a little will go a long way!

Tip!

You can help repair your skin’s barrier by simplifying your skin care regime, using natural products with a suitable pH, plus ana always adding a moisturizer that contains humectants like botanical hyaluronic acid.

What? You Want Me To Put Acid On My Face?!

March 26, 2023 Rebecca Siegfried

Acids and skincare don’t exactly sound like a good pair...

However, acids encompass some of our favorite ingredients–things like Hyaluronic Acid (preferably Botanical), Glycolic Acid, and even Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)! Let’s delve in to how we can use them.

First of all, an important note:

There are two different types of acids used in skincare; exfoliating acids and fatty acids. When used properly in your skincare routine you can see the benefits in the way your skin looks and feels.

Below, we have listed some of the most common types of exfoliating acids used in skincare...

Exfoliating Acids
Exfoliating acids help skin to look its best by removing dead skin cells and revealing a fresh complexion.

Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is the smallest and most highly soluble of the alpha hydroxy acids making it especially efficacious in exfoliants and chemical peels. It reduces cell adhesion in the uppermost layer of the epidermis, promoting exfoliation of dead skin and cell replacement contributing to a smoother brighter complexion.

Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polymer found in connective, neural, and epithelial tissue in both animals and humans. Hyaluronic acid can hold about 1,000 times its weight in water. Because of its ability to hold water, HA is an easy choice when looking for an ingredient that will hold moisture when applied to the skin. As always and forever, we recommend botanical HA only!

Lactic Acid
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid manufactured by fermentation of non-GMO corn derived carbohydrates. Lactic acid is used in the formulation of cleansers, splashes, astringents, and moisturizers to enhance the appearance of dry or mature skin. Lactates are also effective humectants and buffering agents in soaps and wipes due to their excellent ability to attract and hold moisture within the skin.

Citric Acid
Naturally occurring citric acid is a member of the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) group and in skin care products it is often used as an ingredient in exfoliants and chemical peels, Most often citric acid is used to adjust the pH in personal care products such as lotions, cremes, shampoos, etc.

Fatty acids
Are critical building blocks in helping skin to appear hydrated, plump, and more youthful. Essential fatty acids are not produced by the body naturally so they must be eaten or applied directly to the skin.

Myristic Acid
Myristic acid is a non-toxic fatty acid that occurs naturally in some foods, such as animal fats and most vegetables. Nutmeg, palm oil, and coconut oil contain relatively high levels of myristic acid. The saturated fatty acid myristic acid has 14 carbon atoms. Myristic acid is used as a cleansing, surfactant and opacifying agent in cosmetics and personal care products.

Stearic Acid
Stearic acid is a vegetable (castor) derivative used to stiffen and stabilize lotions and cremes. Stearic acid occurs naturally in the human body and vegetable fats.

P.S. So the next time you reach for a pretty bottle of shampoo or face & body care products, look at the ingredient deck and think about which kind of "acid" you are wanting on your skin and what is it's main purpose.

P.P.S. You can always email us your questions here at Dr. Lucy for a quick response and some helpful advice!

With Love and Blessings,
Rebecca

At What Age Will My Skin Start to Dry Out?

July 1, 2022 Rebecca Siegfried

25! Believe it or not! After the age of 25 the skin metabolism slows down!

5 Reasons Your Skin Becomes Drier With Age...

1. It is caused primarily by physiological alterations to the function of the skin. In this case, the skin becomes gradually drier and less elastic over time.

2. Barrier function is weakened, contributing to a loss of moisture.

3. The metabolic system within each cell slows.

4. Genetic predisposition and ethnicity.

5. Hormonal changes like the onset of menopause and drop in estrogen will also have an impact on your skin.

What do Some Dermatologist's Say About Aging Dry, Crepey Skin...

“Sunscreen and moisturizer are the two most effective anti-aging products,” says Kejal Shah, MD, dermatologist at Cooper Clinic Dermatology in Dallas. “Exposure to UV light speeds up the natural aging process of your skin, causing wrinkles and rough, blotchy uneven pigmentation.”

Is There Really Hope For Dry, Crepey Skin? YES!!

"Waldorf, MD, director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, recommends products with glycerin or hyaluronic acid to prevent or improve the appearance of crepey skin. These ingredients pull in and hold moisture so your skin stays hydrated and looks plump."

"Good nutrition and adequate fluids are also helpful. Dehydration increases the risk of skin injury. Sometimes minor nutritional deficiencies can cause rashes, skin lesions, and other skin changes, even if you have no other symptoms. Plus keep skin moist with lotions and other moisturizers. Do not use soaps that are heavily perfumed." -MedlinePlus

Are Your Electronic Devices Giving You "Toasted Skin Syndrome?!"

April 8, 2022 Rebecca Siegfried

This weeks French Friday is all about protecting your skin from "Toasted Skin Syndrome" while using your electronic devices.

Plus! Don't Miss!** The Ultra Moisturizer and Cult Favorite 2-in-1 Hydrating Serum Duo! Nourish and nurture your skin while adding a layer of protection against the harmful environmental elements.

"Toasted Skin Syndrome" What It Is and How You Can Avoid It!...

No matter how I try to keep computer work to a minimum I am still on these devices way too much! Here is an article by Dr. Janet Zand, Oriental Medicine on how we are damaging our skin by using our electronics whether it's the computer, phone, iPad, etc.!

Do You Use Any of the Following Devices?

Laptop, phone, computer space heater, heating pad, electric blanket, etc.?

If so, you might unknowingly be doing damage to your skin.** That includes damage to your blood vessels ... and possibly even the collagen and elastin in your skin. **(And as you probably know, collagen and elastin are what keep your skin from sagging.)

So What is Causing This Damage?

It’s a condition called Erythema Ab Igne, or Toasted Skin Syndrome. And it’s becoming more and more common.

Here’s What You Need to Know to Protect Your Skin...

Signs of Toasted Skin Syndrome!

Toasted Skin Syndrome is caused by heat, although it is not a burn.** Instead, it’s caused by a low level of heat, between 109.4 to 116.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the most common devices that give off that kind of heat are space heaters, heated blankets, heating pads, and laptops.

And the damage is so gradual, you don’t even notice it at first.** Then one day, you see an itchy, reddish-brown rash on your skin. Unfortunately, by that time the damage is done. Your skin has been “toasted,” damaging blood vessels, collagen, and elastin in the skin.

In the most serious cases, Toasted Skin Syndrome can even lead to certain types of skin cancer.

What To Do About It...

Luckily, the solution is very simple. Just be mindful about how you use devices that give off heat.

For instance, don’t crank up a heating pad or blanket to the highest setting, or use them for prolonged periods of time. And don’t get too close to space heaters. As great as it might feel to stand over a heater in the winter, that warm air will damage your skin.

Don’t Put Your Laptop On Your Lap...

If you’ve ever worked with your laptop directly on your lap, you probably already know how quickly it can heat up your skin.

In fact, a report published by the National Institutes of Health found that laptops are a big cause of Toasted Skin Syndrome, affecting skin on the legs, thighs, and even on the stomach.

Now, if you really like using your laptop on your lap, another option is a lap desk. A lap desk rests on your lap, and your laptop sits on top of it. (Lap desks are better for your laptop, too, since they give your laptop better ventilation!)

Finally, If You Ever End Up With a Rash From Toasted Skin Syndrome...

You can try treating it with over-the-counter hydrocortisone 1% cream. Or, for a more natural solution, try aloe vera gel.

If there’s no improvement in a couple of days, see a dermatologist. They can provide other treatments or medications to help heal your skin.

So ... be careful with those heating devices. And here’s to warmer weather ahead, when we won’t need space heaters or heating blankets anymore!

P.S. Don't Forget to wear "Blue Light Blocking Glasses" whenever you are working on the computer, iPad or phone for that matter!

With Love and Blessings,

Rebecca

A fun story with a Delta flight attendant!

April 1, 2022 Rebecca Siegfried

Had to re-share this email+!
A couple of Fridays ago, I had to fly to LA for two meetings, and as you know I always take some of the Dr. Lucy Sample Kits and information with me to hand out to the flight attendants. As you also know, flying 35,000 feet in the air is sooo hard on the skin and unfortunately very aging, so the attendants are always excited to receive the Sample Kits!

On another positive note, some of the Dr. Lucy products like the Ultra Moisturizer, contain botanical hyaluronic acid (the "smart" ingredient) which can hold 1,000 times its weight in moisture! Plus this special moisturizer has super protective oils and other key ingredients to combat the harsh environment of the air in the plane.

The flight attendants always have a million skin questions!

Ok, back to my story about the Delta flight attendant. Michelle was a very pretty, tall, happy and very spunky lady that was the lead attendant in first class. I got up to use the restroom and had to wait because it was occupied, so of course I started a conversation with her. Michelle asked me if I was a flight attendant and after I said "no," the conversation transitioned into talking about Dr. Lucy! We were laughing, talking and every time I told her I better sit down she would grab my arm and say, "No, it's alright, you can stay here!"

We went from talking all about Dr. Lucy, to me explaining to her that looking and staying younger was an inside/outside job, and so much more than just putting a nice crème on your face. She asked me what I would recommend for crepey skin and I told her about "dry brushing," plus an excellent body oil and face moisturizer.

Dry brushing in my opinion works so much better than sugar or salt scrubs...

I told her dry brushing works to remove the dead skin cells, which reveals a more youthful skin that looks airbrushed! Plus, it changes your skins texture including tightening, reducing cellulite, but the best thing of all is you look and feel healthier! Dry brush everyday (face and body) before you shower or take a bath, (google how to dry brush). After dry brushing and a bath or shower, apply your toner to your body (yes, the benefits are amazing), natural body oil and face moisturizer like the Dr. Lucy Ultra Moisturizer. A lot of body lotions just do not have enough good oils to make positive changes to your skin.

She also wanted to talk about micro current and if it really did work and was it safe. That is when I told her I have had a micro current practice for ten years, how safe micro current was, how it works, how it is natural, how the body recognizes it as a good wave and that is similar to the same energy within our own bodies.

3 morals to this story?

1. Top of the line, fresh, natural skin care products like Dr. Lucy's are a must.
2. Dry brushing your skin will make it healthier, denser, stronger, more youthful.
3. Micro current is good for you and your skin. Tighten, uplift, mega boost your own collagen production, giving your skin more beautiful, glowing, youthful skin!

P.S. Remember crepey skin is also extremely dehydrated skin. So hydrate, fresh food and good oils inside and out.

With Love and Blessings,
Rebecca

Doc's Testimonial and I'm Impressed!!

I am not a skin care expert, but I do know a little about skin nutrition and health. Certainly not as much as Rebecca at Dr. Lucy, but I do know I would not be without a "daily dose" of her moisturizer. After a shave and a shower in the morning, nothing feels better on my skin. Simply just feels great. "A little dab'l do do you". Before bed as well. I've been using it for years and when we travel it's one of my most important things in my shaving bag.

Plus, when I do my social media ads for my clinic specialties, I just wash my face and put on a fresh amount of Dr. Lucy's Ultra Moisturizer and my producers tell me my face looks as good and photogenic as if I had my face done professionally!!

Thank you, Dr. Lucy. Thank you, Rebecca, for your care and concern in making ---in my humble opinion-- Dr. Lucy's the best skin care products available. -Doc Siegfried

Does An Egg White Facial Mask Really Give You Better Skin?

January 21, 2022 Rebecca Siegfried

I would say yes! Here is why!...

Skin care should be simple, yet marketing tells us it's actually complicated. Sorry, not buying that concept. We are natural beings, so skin care products should not only be natural and packed with nutrient dense ingredients, but also have the power and ability to support, balance, renew and hydrate your skin!

Egg whites are natural, nutrient dense, plus a skin care game changer!

Egg whites contains beneficial proteins that can increase skin hydration, destroy the bacteria that causes acne, and provide temporary anti-aging benefits, such as tightening the skin and plumping fine lines and wrinkles.

What are some of the nutrients in egg whites and how do they benefit my skin? I told you I love natural science!

Egg whites are made up of 10% protein, which can have an immense effect on our skin's ability to heal and regenerate new skin cells.

4 grams of protein - Immense effect on our skin's ability to heal and regenerate new skin cells.

5 milligrams of sodium - Helps to restore the protective skin barrier, plus helps it hold hydration.

1.3 micrograms of folate - Aids in cell regeneration and slows down the appearance of skin aging.

6.6 micrograms of selenium - Minimizes skin damage and inflammation.

2.3 milligrams of calcium - Regulates cell turnover by stimulating certain enzymes, giving you plumper skin.

3.6 milligrams of magnesium - Helps improve your skin's overall appearance.

4.9 milligrams of phosphorus‌ - Promotes the growth, maintenance, and repair of all tissues and cells.

53.8 milligrams of potassium - Supports the rapid growth of new cells.

Quick Skin Care Tips!

November 12, 2021 Rebecca Siegfried

Why You Need To Use a Face Serum and Moisturizer - Day and Night!

First, something that has been on my mind..

One more thing I would like to address before I dive into the main topic on this short missive...

Over the counter products or OTC's are convenient and will usually cost you a lot less, but not always. The problem with OTC products is they are usually made with chemicals in a big factory, or the natural ones are rancid with all their "plant base powers" oxidized and gone by the time they get to you. Plus, they have a very low percentage (pixie dusted) of active ingredients in them to actually help and protect your skin.

*Quality, natural skin care products like Dr. Lucy's not only work better to make those changes in your skin, but they are also more concentrated, so a little will go a long way!

Protect Your Skin Barrier!

The need to protect the skin's barrier (outer most layer) is so important in keeping your skin healthy and happy. I am proud to say that Dr. Lucy is at the forefront of the natural skin care field.

Let’s look at the needs and benefits of using a fresh, natural, potent, skin changing serum and moisturizer.

Do I really need a natural face serum?

Yes, from age 30+. Look, don’t you want the best skin you can possibly have as you get older? Then, use a natural (only) serum, preferably a gel, to not only boost our other products into working better, but to really ramp up those antioxidants, natural retinols, Vit. C, etc. for deeper penetration.

-Listen to Dr. Lawrence Samuels, Chief Dermatologist at St. Luke’s Hospital on the benefits of a face serum...

A serum is your go to product to improve the overall look of your complexion. Serums are formulated to keep the skin hydrated by putting a protective barrier between it and the outside. Serums have a lipid-soluble base that allows the active ingredients to actually penetrate into the epidermis. The active ingredients can bring antioxidants to the skin, restore cell growth and help decrease pore size. They are formulated to penetrate deep into the skin to deliver key ingredients by way of smaller molecules. Serums are used after your crème cleanser and toner, but before your moisturizers.

Can I use a face serum instead of a moisturizer?

The quick answer is No. Sorry, didn't mean to sound harsh.

Here’s why…

Serums are the "work horses" in skin care. They have very little humectants (emollients) in them, are lighter in texture and have smaller molecules to provide deeper penetration of concentrated nutrients and antioxidants into the skin layers. A serum also enhances the effects of the moisturizer.

A moisturizer has humectants (emollients) that a serum just doesn't have. Its main job is to hydrate, protect and seal in moisture for a more softer, supple, youthful looking skin.

P.S.

Food for thought. When you don't use a moisturizer, your skin's Ph becomes disrupted. This in-turn will cause dry, red, rashy, ashy, wrinkled, sagging skin, with more skin tags and lesions. Plus, your skin will not age well and you could possibly end up looking 5-10 years older than you are. I'm sure you feel the same, but you will never catch me not wearing a moisturizer...ever. :)

P.P.S.

I want to leave this on a positive note. I truly think you are beautiful inside and out. Have a good weekend and take care of you!

4 Ways To Help Wake-up Your Tired Face!

October 29, 2021 Rebecca Siegfried

Did you know the first and most common reason for tired skin is lack of sleep?...

Don't forget your 8!

Repeat after me, "sleep is my friend!" Getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night and going to bed consistently at the same time every night will help to keep you and your skin healthy, happy and balanced!

“Overnight, skin goes into repair and restore mode, meaning it removes toxins, repairs cell and DNA damage caused by the environment, replaces aging cells, and creates new ones. That’s why after good-quality sleep, skin looks fresher, younger, and more radiant.” According to the National Sleep Foundation

Moisturizing your damp skin!

Timing is very important when applying your moisturizer. Right after you wash your face or jump out of the shower, lightly blot your skin with a clean towel and then apply your toner, serum and the moisturizer. This way your skin will absorb all those nutrients and stay plump, hydrated and glowy all day!

"Dryness is the most common cause of dull face skin. It creates cracks in skin's surface and causes dead skin cells to build up, making the complexion look uneven and lackluster", says Kenneth Howe, M.D., a dermatologist at Wexler Dermatology in NYC.
