Why Are You Taking Care Of Your Skin?

July 20, 2025 Rebecca Siegfried

Because it's more than just skin deep...

Make your skin care routine something that you look forward to every day, and watch how it will benefit you!

What a good skin care routine can do for you and your skin!

Simple things such as washing and moisturizing your face twice a day can be very comforting, relaxing and calming.

Surprising benefits of a good skin care routine includes restored firmness and even texture. Even protection from sun damage is a hidden benefit of good skin care.

Good skin care is linked to better overall health, both physically and mentally.

Skin care is important because it protects your skin, which is the body's largest organ. According to Dr. Wassef of Dermatology & Cutaneous Surgery Institute, good skin care helps your skin stay in good condition. With proper care and maintenance, your skin can look better than ever before. Aug 19, 2020

Reap the benefits!

A good skin care routine helps your skin look more hydrated. Taking care of your skin can also prevent wrinkles. Here are some more benefits of a good skin care routine:

*Restores firmness and even texture to the skin.

* Improved skin hydration.

*Over time, the skin naturally loses elasticity and can appear saggy and crepe-like.

* Slows down aging.

* As we age the skin loses hydration, brightness, and collagen. A good skin care routine can leave skin looking healthier and younger.

* Better skin condition.

* Reduce visible pores, wrinkles, and under eye circles

* Cumulative results.

*Protection from harmful sun rays will prevent sun damage, blemishes, and hyper-pigmentation.

*A good skin care routine will also protect the skin from harmful bacteria and allergens, leaving you feeling more confident and looking healthier.

With Love and Blessings!
Rebecca

What Is Your Skin Barrier?

November 3, 2023 Rebecca Siegfried

And is it healthy?

You might be saying to yourself, what is my skin barrier and what does it do for me? In simple terms, your skin barrier is a watertight seal that keeps the outermost layers of your skin and cells smoothly together. If this outer layer of skin gets damaged, it can look and feel dry, rough, irritated and dull.

“When the skin barrier is intact, you can maintain adequate skin hydration, antioxidant benefits, and immune protection from the environment. Think of your outer skin layer like a brick wall, where the skin cells are the bricks and natural lipids are the mortar,” says Dr. Zeichner a NY based dermatologist.

Here are some causes for skin barrier damage...

1. Alkaline detergents or soaps.

2. Over-washing or over-exfoliating your skin.

3. Too much sun exposure.

4. Psychological distress. "Studies show that both acute and chronic stress can exert negative effects on overall skin wellness, as well as exacerbate a number of skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, acne, and hair loss". Harvard Health Medical School, Neera Nathan, MD, MSHS, Contributor

How to start repairing your damaged skin barrier!

Dutch philosopher, Desiderius Erasmus from the 1500's said, 'prevention is better than the cure'. With a name like that, he must be right!

1. Repairing ingredients such as fatty acids, cholesterol, ceramides and hyaluronic acid are essential! As always, Dr. Lucy has you covered...literally!

2. Stay away from scrubs, they are just too abrasive and can harm your skin's protective barrier. A gentle, leave on/wash off, fruit enzyme peel is a perfect option.

3. Lukewarm water is the best, not too cold, not too hot. I think Goldilocks would agree. ;)

4. A mild, natural, crème cleanser like Dr. Lucy's Gentle Crème Cleanser will help to keep your skin barrier healthy and balanced.

5. Use a natural sunscreen that is rich in antioxidants and has an SPF of 30 or greater.

"The skin barrier is important to human life. Physically, it protects from external threats such as infectious agents, chemicals, systemic toxicity and allergens. Internally, the skin helps to maintain homeostasis and protects from enhanced loss of water from the body". -National Library of Medicine, Indian J Res. Jan 2018

This is the perfect time of year to up your game with taking care of your skin's barrier!

With Love and Blessings!
Rebecca

Quick Skin Care Tips!

Why You Need To Use a Face Serum and Moisturizer - Day and Night!

First, something that has been on my mind..

One more thing I would like to address before I dive into the main topic on this short missive...

Over the counter products or OTC's are convenient and will usually cost you a lot less, but not always. The problem with OTC products is they are usually made with chemicals in a big factory, or the natural ones are rancid with all their "plant base powers" oxidized and gone by the time they get to you. Plus, they have a very low percentage (pixie dusted) of active ingredients in them to actually help and protect your skin.

*Quality, natural skin care products like Dr. Lucy's not only work better to make those changes in your skin, but they are also more concentrated, so a little will go a long way!

Protect Your Skin Barrier!

The need to protect the skin's barrier (outer most layer) is so important in keeping your skin healthy and happy. I am proud to say that Dr. Lucy is at the forefront of the natural skin care field.

Let’s look at the needs and benefits of using a fresh, natural, potent, skin changing serum and moisturizer.

Do I really need a natural face serum?

Yes, from age 30+. Look, don’t you want the best skin you can possibly have as you get older? Then, use a natural (only) serum, preferably a gel, to not only boost our other products into working better, but to really ramp up those antioxidants, natural retinols, Vit. C, etc. for deeper penetration.

-Listen to Dr. Lawrence Samuels, Chief Dermatologist at St. Luke’s Hospital on the benefits of a face serum...

A serum is your go to product to improve the overall look of your complexion. Serums are formulated to keep the skin hydrated by putting a protective barrier between it and the outside. Serums have a lipid-soluble base that allows the active ingredients to actually penetrate into the epidermis. The active ingredients can bring antioxidants to the skin, restore cell growth and help decrease pore size. They are formulated to penetrate deep into the skin to deliver key ingredients by way of smaller molecules. Serums are used after your crème cleanser and toner, but before your moisturizers.

Can I use a face serum instead of a moisturizer?

The quick answer is No. Sorry, didn't mean to sound harsh.

Here’s why…

Serums are the "work horses" in skin care. They have very little humectants (emollients) in them, are lighter in texture and have smaller molecules to provide deeper penetration of concentrated nutrients and antioxidants into the skin layers. A serum also enhances the effects of the moisturizer.

A moisturizer has humectants (emollients) that a serum just doesn't have. Its main job is to hydrate, protect and seal in moisture for a more softer, supple, youthful looking skin.

P.S.

Food for thought. When you don't use a moisturizer, your skin's Ph becomes disrupted. This in-turn will cause dry, red, rashy, ashy, wrinkled, sagging skin, with more skin tags and lesions. Plus, your skin will not age well and you could possibly end up looking 5-10 years older than you are. I'm sure you feel the same, but you will never catch me not wearing a moisturizer...ever. :)

P.P.S.

I want to leave this on a positive note. I truly think you are beautiful inside and out. Have a good weekend and take care of you!
