What is "Clean Beauty" and the "French Way?"

March 4, 2022 Rebecca Siegfried

Can you believe March is here? This means a new season is just around the corner. Even the cherry blossoms are peeking out!

I was thinking now would be a good time to revisit the importance of "Clean Beauty" and the "French Way".

What Exactly Does "Clean Beauty" Mean to You?...

Here at Dr. Lucy "Clean Beauty" means ingredients and proprietary formulations that meet the highest industry standards, which are safe and non-toxic. If you are using other products than Dr. Lucy's on your skin, do they meet these standards? There is a difference!

Ingredients That Are "Not Clean" and Very Toxic to You and Your Skin. Well Worth the Read.:

Formaldehyde: A known carcinogen and irritant found in nail products, hair dye, fake-eyelash adhesives and some shampoos. It has been banned in other countries.

Fragrance: Has hormone-disrupting effects. Fragrance is also connected to headaches, dizziness, asthma and allergies. Instead, use products with natural fragrances only.

Lead: A known carcinogen and hormone disruptor found in certain eyeliners, hair dye and lipsticks.

Mercury: A known irritant and allergen that, with body accumulation over time, can impair the brain and nervous system.

Parabens (Propyl-, Isopropyl-, Butyl- and Isobutyl-): Used as preservatives in many products. A study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology in 2004 detected parabens in breast tumors and discussed their estrogen-like properties. While this doesn’t create a direct connection with cancer, I recommend avoiding these ingredients.

Oxybenzone: An active ingredient in chemical sunscreens that accumulates in fatty tissues and is linked to allergies, hormone disruption and cellular damage. I recommend wearing skin-protective clothing and using natural minerals or zinc products.

DEA/TEA/MEA (Ethanolamines): Used as emulsifiers and foaming agents for shampoos, body washes, soaps and topical application. It’s been associated with cancer in animal studies.
Sodium lauryl (ether) sulfate (SLS, SLES): A former industrial degreaser now used to make soap foamy, it’s absorbed into the body.

Diethylene glycol (or DEG): A central nervous system depressant and potent kidney and liver toxin. Sometimes found in fragrances. Glycerin and propylene glycol are sometimes contaminated with D.

*We use only ingredients in our Dr. Lucy products that are natural, organic, eco-cert, cruelty-free and fair trade. All from top of the line, exclusive companies in the U.S. and England.

What is the "French Way" Anyway?

Taking special care of your skin with a consistent natural routine, using gentle yet therapeutic products everyday for the rest of your life.

A French Woman’s Daily Skin Care Routine: 5 Major Steps...

1. Cleansing the skin with a natural, hydrating crème cleanser.

2. A natural toner is without question a must right after cleansing.

3. French women always use the best natural face serums, moisturizers and face oils like Dr. Lucy's to nourish their skin.

4. Nightly regimens always and forever include, never going to bed without removing your makeup. Plus, a natural anti-aging serum is a must.

5. Weekly to monthly facials which can be done in your own home, or in a natural, botanical product salon if you prefer.

A Very Strong Side Note on Using a Natural Toner...

I know of sooo many skin care companies that will tell you a toner is not necessary. In fact, some dermatologist (not all) will tell you this also! Sorry and respectfully speaking try not to listen to them about this. I know you are thinking, "Wow! That was kind of a bold statement you just made!" Yes, I know, but hear me out and please read on...

Let's Listen to Dermatologist Arielle Kauvar Talk with Allure on Why Using a Toner Is So Important!

"To put it simply, toner looks like water and acts like water. But I swear it's not water. It's packed with so much more than hydrogen and oxygen. Depending on the toner, it also can contain acids, glycerin, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories.

Plus, on a makeup-related note, toner is like a primer for the rest of your skin-care routine like serums and moisturizer, New York-based dermatologist Arielle Kauvar tells Allure".

French Skin Care and Makeup vs. U.S. Skin Care and Makeup...There is a Difference!

Women in France value having beautiful skin. Emphasizing on quality, natural skin care products are very important to them. The abundance of many facial salons, not only in the big city of Paris, but also in small villages around the country shows how important skin care is. There are about as many skin care salons in France as there are nail salons in the United States. Monthly facials are a regular part of a woman’s life in France. In the U.S. we are so busy with our lives and always have excuses to not taking the time to relax and care for ourselves. A pampering facial can be just what the Doctor ordered!

Remember, “Skin care lasts a lifetime, makeup lasts a day!”

P.S. Makeup (when used) should be as natural and as toxic free as possible. Think of makeup as an enhancement to your own beautiful face.

What Does All of This Information Mean to You?

In a nutshell, healthy skin means happier and more contented you!

A little trivia!
Why does Dr. Lucy use organic Aloe leaf juice in some of the products?
Aloe leaf juice speeds up skin cell reproduction by as much as eight times and penetrates the epidermis (outer skin layer) four times faster than water. According to Dr. Danhof of North Texas Research Laboratories.

With love and blessings,
Rebecca

Your Acid Mantle Ph Test!

October 16, 2019 Rebecca Siegfried

Acid Test

Answer these questions to find out where you fall on the pH spectrum.

1. How does your skin feel after cleansing?

a) Soft and smooth

b) Tight and dry

c) Still slightly oily or not thoroughly clean

2. How often do you moisturize your face?

a) At least morning and evening

b) Once a day

c) Never

3. Has your skin become sensitive to products you regularly use, including makeup and creams?

a) No, it feels normal, like always.

b) Once in a while

c) Yes. It seems like it reacts to everything I put on it lately.

4. How often does your skin have dry, flaky, rough patches?

a) Never

b) Sometimes

c) Usually

5. Do you notice that your skin looks duller and has more lines in the morning?

a) No

b) Yes, usually

c) It's a very rare occurrence.

6. Is your skin excessively oily and prone to breakouts (whereas it wasn't in the past)?

a) No

b) Occasionally

c) Yes

7. Does your skin often look red and feel irritated?

a) No

b) It stings only after applying products.

c) Yes

8. Does your skin look plump, moist, and dewy?

a) Almost always

b) Rarely

c) It's plump, but more greasy than dewy

If you answered mostly b's, your skin's pH is. . .
Too high. Your chronic dryness and wrinkling likely mean your acid mantle is being dismantled—you're too alkaline. With its protective lipids removed, your skin is falling prey to bacteria, UV rays, and harsh ingredients. Take a close look at how (and how often) you're cleansing, scrubbing, and hydrating. You need to make sure that your skin can ward off the damaging factors that are making it look older than it should.

If you answered mostly c's, your skin's pH is. . .
Too low. Your regular oiliness, breakouts, and sensitivity point to acid overload. Chances are, you're OD'ing on the peeling products (think acids) in an effort to sop up excess grease. And while this type of exfoliation can make for a healthy complexion, your skin is suffering from too much of a good thing. Your mission: Use products in moderation instead of abusing them (and your skin).

If you answered mostly a's, your skin's pH is. . .
Just right! Your skin (and its pH) live in a shiny, happy place not inhabited by premature aging and wrinkles. Having skin this good isn't an accident, so kudos to you for gold-star moisturizing and exfoliating, and using the right products. Stay on the same course and you'll continue to glow.

It’s cold here in McMinnville, Oregon already! Dehydration has started!

October 11, 2019 Rebecca Siegfried

This means the dry air from outside and our heaters inside are blowing on our skin, taking the moisturizer and essential oils out and disturbing the protective layer. You know that look, lines, wrinkles, sagging, skin issues, not looking like yourself and the list goes on!

Here are a few “real” tips to help keep moisturizer in your skin and your Ph mantle intact!

1. Dr. Lucy’s Gentle Creme Cleanser (always use a creme cleanser) for hydrating,
protecting and cleansing deeply yet gently.

2. Balance and Refresh Toner to balance, hydrate, protect, calm and elevate your
other naturally powerful skin care products.

3. 2-in-1 Hydrating Serum is a must! This serum is made for around your eye area and
face. The smaller molecules help to drive the botanical hyaluronic acid and mega
nutrients deep into the skin layers for plump, bright, glowing skin.

4. Seal in all those nutrient dense products with our Ultra Moisturizer with botanical
hyaluronic acid, balanced natural carrier oils and antioxidants.

5. You will probably need to, “double seal” (most of use do this time of year) all those
protective products onto/into your skin with the Dr. Lucy Face Oil or the Rouge
Revitalizing Face Oil.

6. Don’t forget to use the Luscious Rose Equalizer Hydrating Masque a few times
week and always after you cleanse day or evening for an added deep nutrient
dense, hydration boost.

7. Remember, while you sleep your skin is renewing so better skin care at night (all the above steps) will give you better skin in the morning.

Like icing on a beautiful French cake.  #naturalsunscreen

March 6, 2019 Rebecca Siegfried

I truly think these are two of the best natural, yummy sunscreens I have ever run into! I am super sensitive to fragrance and chemical smells and these are so fresh, light and the smell is soft not like a Coppertone smell. Plus amazing on top of your moisturizer and under makeup! The @dermastore has both of these and they are well worth the price. @hyntbeaty @eminenceorganics

If you think it’s time for a heavier day or night cream, consider this:

February 8, 2019 Rebecca Siegfried

The surprising truth is, heavier creams don’t always moisturize well enough to help your skin recuperate. And dermatologist say these very creams can smother your face in a clogging, irritating film, and even cause blemishes.

Whether it’s day or night your skin is stressed from the effects of environmental pollutants, coffee runs, not enough water, etc., what your skin really needs is a breath of fresh air and a long drink of moisture. A natural, self adjusting moisturizer that nourishes and protects your skin all through the day and night. With our Dr. Lucy Ultra Moisturizer your skin isn’t just softer, stronger, nourished and stress free, it actually is healthier!
