Do You Need Botanical Hyaluronic Acid For Your Skin?

June 6, 2025 Rebecca Siegfried

Can It Really Help Your Skin?...

As we age moisture can drop off significantly, which makes the skin lose elasticity and expose the natural signs of aging on the skin. Topical, rather than injectable, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) plays a critical role in skin health with it's unique ability to hold in moisture. Hyaluronic Acid is also a "smart nutrient" as it can adjust its moisture absorption into your skin based on the humidity-relative to the season and climate.

According to the 1999 Journal of Investigative Technology, Hyaluronic Acid penetrates the skin so that the skin is able to absorb just the right amount of moisture. Unlike Collagen, HA is able to penetrate the skin's upper layers to improve and benefit the skin when applied topically. Elavonne, a skincare blog with over 20 years experience in developing researched based formulas to improve health says, "Hyaluronic Acid is a major component of skin, where it benefits tissue repair and protection." Hyaluronic Acid is IMPERATIVE to good skin health.

Is Botanical Hyaluronic Acid more safe and effective than the chemical version?

Yes! Clinical studies have shown it has a better effect on the skin than man-made Hyaluronic Acid in providing higher moisturizing, softening and overall improvement of skin complexion.

Where does Botanical Hyaluronic Acid come from?

Botanical hyaluronic acid is derived from a plant called Cassia Angustifolia (Senna alexandria).

Where does chemical Hyaluronic Acid come from?

Up until the late 1990’s, the only way of deriving Hyaluronic Acid was to get it from animal-based sources, such as rooster combs. No thank you!

Added Benefits of Botanical Hyaluronic Acid!

1. Deep Hydration
Botanical hyaluronic acid acts as a powerful humectant, drawing moisture from the environment and locking it into the skin. This results in lasting hydration that helps maintain a supple, well-moisturized complexion.

2. Natural Plumping Effect
By retaining water in the skin, it visibly plumps the surface—softening the look of fine lines and wrinkles for a smoother, more youthful appearance.

3. Enhanced Skin Elasticity
With consistent hydration, the skin becomes more elastic and resilient. This boost in firmness supports a tighter, more lifted look over time.

4. Strengthens Skin Barrier
It reinforces the skin’s natural protective barrier, helping defend against environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays, which can lead to premature aging.

5. Visible, Long-Term Results
Regular use promotes improvements in skin texture and tone, revealing a more radiant, even, and healthy-looking complexion.

* Dr. Lucy products were designed to detect your skin's needs and then act on those detections. What do you mean by "detect" your skin care needs? Naturally potent, botanical ingredients such as botanical hyaluronic acid, can actually sense the weather conditions, then adjust to your own personal environmental needs whether it be the lack of moisture in the air or humectants.

Is Your Skin Dry Or Dehydrated? Plus Don't Miss The French Fall 20% Off Special! (bottom of page).

September 1, 2023 Rebecca Siegfried

Season's are changing and so is your skin!

Just look at the leaves changing colors, how they are becoming dry and falling. Our skin is in the process of hibernating for the winter. Now is the time to get ahead of the dry, changing weather. Let's find some natural solutions for both in the form of food and skin care.

What is the difference between dry and dehydrated?

Dry skin results from too little oil, while dehydrated skin is due to a lack of water.

What does dehydrated skin look like?

Dehydrated skin means that your skin is lacking water. It can be dry and itchy and perhaps dull looking, too. Your overall tone and complexion may appear uneven, and fine lines are more noticeable. While dehydrated skin can be a nuisance, it's relatively easy to treat with the right lifestyle changes. Healthline May 2, 2018

Here are some foods and skin care plus their benefits to hydrate your skin from the inside out!

Cucumber: 96% water - Promote anti-wrinkling and anti-aging activity.

Celery: 95% water - “Drinking celery in juice form allows you to consume much more of the vegetable, thereby consuming higher quantities of its nutrients and vitamins than if you were just munching on a stalk of celery,” says registered dietitian Julia Zumpano, RD, LD.

Iceberg Lettuce: 95% - Heart-healthy benefits of leafy greens.

Zucchini: 94% water - Packed with antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. Those last two are especially important for eye health.

Cauliflower: 92% water - Rich in vitamin C, vitamin K and other key essentials. Cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables contain nutrients that may help lower cholesterol and lower cancer risk.

Tomato: 93-95% water - Benefits, including protection for brain, heart, and gut health. The vegetable, which is also considered a fruit, is a solid source of nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants—namely, lycopene. -Health.com

Watermelon, Melon, Watermelon: 90-91% water - “It contributes key antioxidant nutrients that support disease prevention and overall wellness.” -says Christina Meyer-Jax, RDN, LDN, Standard Process nutrition chair and assistant professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University.

Berries: Strawberry, 90% water - Provide a rich source of flavonoids, compounds associated with improved cognitive function. For example, one study associated eating more berries with delayed cognitive aging of up to 2.5 years. -Science Daily, April 26, 2012

Citrus fruits: grapefruit, lemon, orange, 89% water - Citrus fruits, including oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits and clementines, are an excellent source of vitamin C. And vitamin C supports your immune system, which plays a role in maintaining healthy skin, bones and blood vessels. -Mayo Clinic June 28, 2021

Apple: 84-85% water - Stabilizes blood sugar, lowers cholesterol, reduces blood pressure, eases inflammation, boosts your microbiome (a microbiome protects us against germs, breaks down food to release energy, and produces vitamins), satisfies hunger longer, helps you live longer.

* If you eat an apple a day, you might just live longer, says one study. Researchers discovered that participants who did this were 35% less likely to die when they followed up 15 years later. -Cambridge University Press: 20 January 2016

Cod Liver Oil: And its components, including omega-3, can help support the skin’s overall health. - A 2018 review in Marine Drugs

The review found evidence that fish oil can help by:
Maintaining homeostasis
Improving barrier function
Inhibiting inflammation, particularly from UV light
Promoting skin healing

Dairy products: Yogurt, cream cheese (raw milk products are best)...around 80% water - Good sources of protein, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin D. Dairy foods that undergo fermentation, such as yogurt and some cheeses, are lower in lactose and contain healthful gut bacteria that may benefit digestive health.-Harvard T.H. Chan, School Of Public Health

What to know about dry skin...

The outer layer of the skin provides a barrier, keeping water in the body, protects from harmful toxins penetrating this layer. Dry skin is due to abnormalities in the function of the outside skin layer.

Factors that contribute to dry skin can include:

Hormone imbalances, for example, during menopause
Dry environments:
Low humidity
Excessive bathing
Use of abrasives
Certain ingredients in soaps or detergents
Malnutrition and weight loss
Age
Certain skin conditions such as dermatitis
Other conditions, such as hypothyroidism or chronic kidney disease -Medical News Today, April 29, 2022

The main method of treating dry skin at home is to use moisturizers, emollients, oils or lotions.

The following measures can help keep your skin moist and healthy:

Gently wash your face at least twice a day.
Moisturize.
Use a face oil.
Use warm water and limit bath time.
Use allergen-free moisturizing soap.
Use a humidifier.
Choose fabrics that are kind to your skin.
